Google Business Profile for service businesses in New Zealand: setting it up properly

If you do not have a shopfront, you can still appear in local results. The key is setting it up as a service-area business.

The short answer

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears in Google Search and Maps when people look for a business like yours. If you do not serve customers at your address, you can hide the address and list the areas you serve instead.1 Set it up fully, keep it consistent with your website, and ask happy customers for reviews.

Hiding your address and listing a service area

Google says that if you do not serve customers at your business address, such as for a service-area business, you can choose not to show your address and list your service area instead. When you do, your profile only shows the service area.1

For verification, Google asks for an address it can find, so you will still enter a real address even if the public does not see it.1 Check Google's current guidance before you start, because the rules and the verification steps change.

What to fill in

  1. Business name. Use your real, everyday name. Do not stuff keywords into it.
  2. Main category. Pick the one that best describes what you do, such as a marketing consultant, then add secondary categories if they truly apply.
  3. Service area. List the regions or cities you really serve.
  4. Description. Say plainly what you do, who for and where. Write it for a customer, not for Google.
  5. Services. List each service with a short description.
  6. Website and contact details. Match them exactly to your website so everything agrees.
  7. Photos. Real ones of you, your work or your team.

Reviews

Ask satisfied customers for a review soon after the work, with a direct link to your profile. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly. Do not offer rewards for reviews or write your own, as that is both against Google's rules and a breach of honest advertising.

Keep it up to date

  • Update the profile when your services, hours or contact details change.
  • Post occasional updates or photos so it does not look abandoned.
  • Make sure the details match your website, LinkedIn and any directories.

Why it matters for search

Local results often appear above ordinary web results, and a complete, consistent profile makes it easier for people and for AI assistants to confirm that you exist and what you do. It pairs with a clear website and the habits in my guide to being found in AI search.
