How long does SEO take to work?

Longer than you want, shorter than you fear. Some changes show in hours, but rankings usually take weeks to months.

The short answer

Google says every change takes time to be reflected, that some changes might take effect in a few hours while others can take several months, and that you should generally wait a few weeks before judging whether your work helped.1 For a new site, expect a few months before it starts to compete for more than your own name.

Why it takes time

  • Google has to find, crawl and index your pages first.
  • Then it has to judge how useful they are compared with others already on the web.
  • New sites start with little history or outside trust, so there is little for Google to rely on yet.

A realistic timeline

These are my rough expectations, not Google's figures, and they vary a lot by competition:

  • Days to weeks: your pages are found and indexed, and your own business name starts to appear.
  • One to three months: pages begin to appear for specific, less competitive searches.
  • Three to six months or more: steady gains for broader searches, if you keep publishing useful content and earning links and reviews.

What speeds it up

  1. Get indexed properly. Verify the site in Google Search Console and submit a sitemap.
  2. Target specific searches. A narrow topic with little competition is easier to win than a broad one.
  3. Publish useful, accurate content. Pages that answer real questions, with sources.
  4. Earn outside signals. Google Business Profile, reviews, mentions and links from reputable sites.
  5. Fix the basics. Fast, mobile-friendly pages with clear titles and headings.

What to do while you wait

Do not change everything every week, because you will not know what worked. Make a change, give it a few weeks, and measure the result. If you need enquiries sooner, search ads can bring traffic straight away while SEO builds. Read about which ads to start with.
