Marketing freelancer or agency: which is right for a New Zealand business?

Neither is better. It depends on the size of the job, how much you want to be involved and who will actually do the work.

The short answer

Choose a freelancer when you want direct access to the person doing the work and your needs are focused. Choose an agency when you need many specialists at once, such as video, PR, design and ads, or need a team that can scale quickly. I am a freelancer, so I am biased, and I will tell you where an agency is the better choice.

Where a freelancer usually fits better

  • You talk to the person doing the work. No account manager in between, so briefs and decisions move faster.
  • Lower overheads. There is no large team to pay for, which often means more of your budget goes into the work itself.
  • Flexibility. It is easier to start small, change direction or pause.
  • Good for focused jobs. A strategy, a campaign, a website or an AI setup are well suited to one capable person.

Where an agency usually fits better

  • Breadth. You need design, video, PR and ads all delivered together.
  • Scale. You need a lot produced quickly, or many campaigns running at once.
  • Cover. If one person is away, the work continues.

The risks to watch for on each side

With a freelancer, the risk is capacity: one person can only do so much, and you depend on them. Ask what happens if they are unavailable, and make sure you own your accounts and files. With an agency, the risk is distance: the person who sold the work may not be the person doing it. Ask who exactly will work on your account.

Questions to ask either one

  1. Who will do the work, and who will I speak to?
  2. Will I own the ad accounts, analytics and website, set up in my name?
  3. How will I know whether it is working, and how often will I hear from you?
  4. How is the work priced, and what drives the cost?
  5. Can I see examples of similar work, and talk to a past client?
  6. What happens if I want to stop?

Ownership matters more than size

Whoever you hire, make sure your ad accounts, analytics, domain and website are set up in your own name. It means you can leave at any time with everything. That is how I work, and it is a reasonable thing to expect from anyone.

How I work

I work one-to-one with businesses on strategy, ads, websites and AI systems. You get one plan and one person, with straight answers and clear reports. Pricing depends on the project and I explain what drives it. If that sounds like what you need, say hello. If an agency suits you better, I will say so.

A note on sources

This article is my own opinion from working as a freelancer, so it has no external sources. Treat it as one view, and ask any supplier the questions above.
