Framer or WordPress for a small business website?

Both can run a good business site. The real question is who will edit it, and how much upkeep you want.

The short answer

Choose Framer if you want a polished, fast-looking marketing site that you can edit visually, with little maintenance. Choose WordPress if you need a lot of plugins, complex functionality, or a large amount of content with many editors. For most small businesses selling services, a focused site is enough.

Framer

  • Strengths: strong design control, built-in hosting, easy visual editing, and no software to keep updating.
  • Trade-offs: fewer ready-made add-ons than WordPress, and complex features can need custom work or outside tools.
  • Best for: service businesses, portfolios and campaign sites where the design and message matter most.

WordPress

  • Strengths: a huge ecosystem of themes and plugins, flexible for complicated needs, and widely supported by developers.
  • Trade-offs: self-hosted sites need regular updates, backups and security care, and plugins can slow a site or conflict with each other.
  • Best for: large content sites, online shops with custom needs, or teams that already know it.

Questions to decide

  1. Who will make the edits, and how comfortable are they with technical tools?
  2. Do you need features a simple site cannot do, such as memberships or a complex shop?
  3. Who will look after updates, backups and security?
  4. How much do you care about design polish and speed?
  5. What will it cost over three years, including hosting, plugins and help?

Either way

The platform matters less than the basics: a clear message, fast pages, mobile-friendly design, good titles and an easy way to enquire. See why websites do not get enquiries. I build sites so you can edit them yourself. If you are weighing options, say hello and I will give you an honest view, including when WordPress is the better fit.

A note on sources

This is my own opinion and experience. I build with Framer, so I am not neutral, and plans and features on both change often, so check each product's current details before deciding.
