The short answer
A website that gets no enquiries usually has one of two problems. Either the wrong people are arriving, or the right people arrive and cannot quickly tell what you do, why to trust you or what to do next. Fix the second one first, because it is free and it makes every other kind of marketing work harder.
Seven things to check, in order
- Can a stranger tell what you do in five seconds? Open your home page on your phone. Does the top of the page say what you do, who for, and where? If it says "welcome" or a vague slogan, rewrite it.
- Is there one clear next step? Pick the main action, such as "send an enquiry" or "call", and make it obvious and repeated. A page with six competing buttons gets fewer clicks than one with a single clear one.
- Does it work on a phone? Most visitors will be on one. Check that text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and nothing jumps around as it loads.
- Is it fast? Google's Core Web Vitals say the main content of a page should appear within 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load, measured for most visits on both mobile and desktop.1 Large images are the usual cause of slow pages.
- Does it build trust? Add real evidence: named testimonials, results, credentials, recognisable clients, a photo of you. People buy from people they trust.
- Is the form easy? Every extra field loses some people. Ask only for what you need to reply, and confirm clearly when it has sent.
- Is it tracked? Without tracking you cannot tell whether the problem is traffic or conversion. Set up Google Analytics and mark form submissions as key events, so you can see which pages and sources produce enquiries.2
Then look at who is visiting
If the site is clear and trustworthy but still quiet, check the traffic. Look at which searches or ads bring people in. A site can have plenty of visitors who were never going to buy, for example people searching for jobs or free templates. The fix is better targeting, not a new design.
A quick test
Show your home page to someone who does not know your business for five seconds, then hide it and ask what you do and what you would click next. If they cannot answer, that is your first fix.
When to rebuild and when to tweak
Tweak when the structure is sound and the message is the problem. Rebuild when the site is slow, hard to edit, or cannot show the clarity and proof you need. I build sites so you can edit them yourself, so changes stop costing a developer fee. If you want a second opinion on yours, send me the address and I will tell you what I would fix first.
